George Wilbur Gornall, age 85, of Westerville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2025.

Born on November 22, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio, George was the son of the late Evert and Marie Gornall. He graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in 1957 and continued his education at Otterbein College, later earning a master's degree from The Ohio State University.

A gifted athlete, George excelled in football, basketball, and baseball throughout his youth, high school, and college years. His passion for sports extended into his professional life, where he coached thousands of athletes in football, basketball, baseball, and golf, finding joy in mentoring and inspiring others both on and off the field. A devoted Buckeye fan, George loved watching and discussing Ohio State football and basketball, often traveling with his family to Big Ten campuses and bowl games to cheer on his beloved Buckeyes. To George, nothing compared to spending a crisp fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium. In retirement, George cherished the opportunity to coach his grandson, Alex, and took immense pride in cheering him on at his soccer, basketball, and baseball games.

George dedicated 53 years to education, beginning his teaching career in Southwestern City Schools and later serving at Grandview Heights High School and Bishop Watterson High School. At Grandview, he formed lasting friendships with educators and students, proudly embracing his identity as a Bobcat. His influence as a dedicated teacher and coach left a profound and enduring impact on all who had the privilege of working with or learning from him.

In addition to his career in education, George contributed to his community in countless ways, including volunteering, refereeing youth sports, and working for many years at the Ohio State Fair and The Ohio State University.

George was preceded in death by his two brothers, Donald Gornall and Thomas Gornall. He is survived by his loving wife, Leona; his children, Lisa (Peter) and George (Lauren); and his cherished grandchildren, Alexander, Kassidy, and Kaedance. He is also survived by his sister, Harriet Wengert; his brother, William Gornall; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a visitation at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 313 N State Street, Westerville, OH, on Monday, May 19, from 9:30am to 10:20am, followed by a Catholic Mass from 10:30am to 11:30am. In accordance with George's wishes, cremation and private burial will be observed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in George's name are suggested to Bishop Watterson High School or Otterbein "O" Club.

George's legacy of service, honesty, and having fun will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Leona (Mrs. Hotchkiss): I am so sorry for your loss. You and Mr. Gornall were my two favorite teachers. Unfortunately, I will be out of the country on the day of the services. If you need anything, do not hesitate to contact me. I appreciate all that the two of you did for me and for so many others.

Jenny Kutz - May 6, 2025

Sending prayers of peace for the family at this time. I’m a friend of Lisa and am in Portugal. Please know I sat in a beautiful cathedral in Porto, Portugal and said a prayer for George and the family. The history of the cathedral felt as deep and rich as George’s life and how much he loved his family. Take care of each other during this time.

Dan Bjelac - May 6, 2025

I am so sorry to hear of George's (Mr. Gornall's) passing. He taught me geometry at Bishop Watterson many years ago. He was always patient, kind, and good-natured, and I am certain that he will be missed. I hope that your memories will be a comfort to you during this difficult time.
