William J. Slater 78, of Westerville passed away on October 11, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Columbus Ohio, graduated from Bishop Hartley High School. Bill had a long career as a "Doctor of Dirt", his words, as he was proudly part owner of Greystone Excavation.

Bill was preceded in death by his father Joseph Slater, and mother Dorthea (McHugh) Slater.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pam (Weiss) Slater; daughters, Staci (Darrell) Roark; Samantha (James) Moore; grandchildren, Madeline and Katelyn Roark, Adam and Adrienne Moore; sister, Sandra (Slater) Stellmack; nieces and nephew, Kelly (Lee) Williams; Kori (Mauricio) Villa; Patrick Wills. He also leaves behind many other family members that will cherish his memory.

Dad loved his sports. He followed the Indians (Guardians) and Cleveland Browns religiously. But his true passion was watching his daughters and grandchildren in all their activities. Mom and Dad rarely missed a game. From JGSL/WYBSL to college. Driving hours and hours and hours back and forth from Indianapolis, IN and Clinton, SC to see his girls play. To say he was proud of his family is an understatement. He was always our biggest champion.

Bill, Husband, Brother, Dad, Uncle, Papa Bear, Papa, Moon Doggie, Billie Joe, Unkle Idie are only a few of his names! He was a gentle giant, always ready to greet you with a huge hug and warm smile. He will forever be remembered for the numerous pool parties, Jimmy Buffet, the Blue Moon, the motorhome trips, Euchre games, feeding all the animals people food, yelling at umpires/refs, frosty mountain waffles, Friggin' Briggins, Gobel, that fine French Beer; an amazing head of hair, and most of all his love.

Words can't express how much he will be missed.

Celebration of Life Open house will be held at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, Saturday, October 21st from 5-7 p.m..

Dear Slater Family, Please accept my deep and sincere sympathy of the loss of “Uncle Bill.” I remember meeting Uncle Bill when I was a very young adult through his niece Kelly….so that has been a quite a few decades ago. I remember him as a very tall, gentle, & sweet soul. I can remember going to Uncle Bill’s house one evening after his great niece Miranda was born. She had colic and Kelly and I had difficulty getting this baby comfortable and quiet. Uncle Bill knew what to do. He scooped that baby right up and held her close (his height) and patted her little behind, & paced the floors with her. That’s the kind of Uncle he was. He was equally an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. Uncle Bill will be missed by so many. May he RIP 😇🙏❤️
