Visitation

Friday, July 19th from 4-8 p.m. at Moreland Funeral Home

Thomas "TK" Noel Kahler, age 81, was born December 14, 1942 in Westerville, Ohio. Son of Karl and Mary Kahler, Tom had two brothers, Steve and Victor Kahler, both deceased. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan MacRae Kahler, children Natalie MacRae Kahler and Nicholas Beau Kahler, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. TK was a husband, father, mentor, coach, and friend to many. He received his bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Heidelberg College in 1964 and his M.A. in Guidance and Counseling from Alabama University in 1967.

TK had tremendous pride in his children, Natalie and Nick. Both were graduates of Upper Arlington High School, class of 2009 and 2016, respectively. Natalie competed in Division I gymnastics and graduated from Temple University. She acquired her law degree from Capital University and now serves as a Franklin County Prosecutor. Nick graduated and commissioned from the U.S. Air Force Academy, now a Captain and KC- 135 pilot at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

Tom brought confidence and guidance to many he taught. He coached, taught and provided mentorship to many high school aged students through his teaching years at: Las Vegas Robertson, Archbishop Hoban, Marion Franklin, Mifflin, Linden McKinley, North Adult Education Center, Briggs, and ECOT, as well as Ohio Dominican College and Highlands University.

TK was an "unofficial scout" in the central Ohio basketball community. In retirement, he volunteered as assistant coach for Jones Middle School in Upper Arlington. He strived and succeeded in making a lasting impact on scores of players and students all over Ohio. TK frequently attended many high school basketball games where he enjoyed watching from the top corner of the bleachers.

In addition to swimming daily, Tom was passionate about travel and learning about other countries' history and cultures. Many trips over the years took him to faraway places such as the China, Galapagos Islands, Greece, Israel, Kenya, Morocco, Norway, Spain, various places in North, Central and South America and most of the Caribbean Islands.

Tom Kahler was proud of all of whom were in his life - his family, children, friends, students, and athletes. He found joy in witnessing others successes, triumphs, and accomplishments.

The Kahler family thanks you for celebrating his life and triumphs. All are encouraged to donate to a charity or organization of their choice in lieu of flowers.

Informal memorial and fellowship will be held at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, Friday from 4-8 p.m., comments from friends beginning at 6:30.

My sincere condolences. I only met TK formally the last bunch of years but always saw him at all the hoops games I attended. Genuinely great guy and clearly a positive influence to everyone that he crossed paths with. Coach ‘em up TK !

TK will be missed by many. He was wonderful with my son and the rest of the Jones 8th grade basketball team a couple of years ago. He’s was a basketball junkie and I always enjoyed speaking with him and all the different games. Rest in Peace TK

Tom was a standout member of our high school class and I had the privilege of being his basketball teammate. One memory is when we had to run the flights of stairs in the old high school and Tom would sneak drinks out of hallway fountains until the coach finally caught him. He was a great classmate, a great teammate and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

We are so sad for your loss! Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. We have so many fond memories of Tom at the gym being so supportive. Lots of hugs sent your way.

Steve Dickerson - Jul 17, 2024

Tom was who he was every minute of everyday no matter where he was or who he was around. Maya Angelou would have loved him- Tom’s legacy was how he made others feel; not who or what he knew!

Larry and Mary Claire Wilson - Jul 16, 2024

Tom was our Friend with a capital F. He was our friend in need , in fun, sharing love and good times, sharing his precious family with us. He was generous beyond words in so many ways and had an open mind to the world around him. In fact I just can’t describe all the ways he assisted everyone in his life. Our memories started years ago with Tom and will be cherished and we will miss his presence. Love and prayers to Sue Natalie and Nick .

Our deepest condolences to you. We had the great fortune of having two sons (Jack 2023 grad and Alex 2027 grad year) learn from Coach TK. He was patient, kind, persistent and our sons, and all others, knew they could count on Coach TK. He was an incredible role model to so many. We are deeply saddened for your loss. May he rest in peace.
