Susan Beatty Keyser passed away in Westerville on September 8th, having recently celebrated her 86th birthday. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on August 25th, 1938 to William and Frances Beatty, who preceded her in passing along with her sister Elizabeth Forg.

A lifelong Westerville resident, Sue attended Westerville High School, graduating in 1956 and from Otterbein College in 1960 with a degree in English.

Sue then embarked on her career as an English teacher at Blendon Middle School and Westerville North High School, retiring in 1992. Some of her greatest joys were the chance meetings with former students, nearly all of whom would fondly remember her fair but firm teaching style; still able to recite the poem she assigned so many years ago. Later, she taught English as a Second Language in Columbus and made lifelong friends that spanned the globe from Kazakhstan to Japan.

Outside of work, Sue's passion included nature and gardening, which she pursued with a second degree in horticulture from The Ohio State University. At home, hundreds of tulips greeted passersby in her front garden every spring, hand-planted every year so she could change the color. Every Summer and Fall, fresh zinnias and vegetables from the back yard.

Thoughtful, intentional, and unassuming, her true gift was friendship. With an innate and natural ability, she was able to connect with people of all ages, ethnicities, and religions. She kept an active social life, hosting or attending book clubs, lunches, and dinners nearly every week. Her passing leaves a hole in the fabric of her vast network of family, friends, and her cherished Hillcrest neighbors that will be impossible to replace and difficult to repair.

Sue is survived by her children, Ted (Leslie) of Dripping Springs, TX and Patrick (Kim) of Loveland, OH, her grandchildren, Amy and Courtney (Patrick and Kim), and Jordan and Davis (Ted and Leslie), her nephews John Forg, Bill Forg, niece Elizabeth Farran Forg, as well as her dear friend Kelli Messick, whom Sue thought of as a daughter, and her family.

A private burial will be held by her family.  A Celebration of Sue’s Life will be held at the Vineyard Columbus Chapel at 11 AM, Saturday, October 12th.  Park in the North Parking Lot for convenience.  Family and friends are invited to share their stories and honor her legacy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sue's memory with Inniswood Metro Gardens, her favorite Westerville park where she spent many afternoons enjoying the beauty of nature. https://www.inniswood.org/

Dear Patrick and Ted, Our hearts are so broken to know our neighbor for 41 years has passed. She was such a precious individual. We just spoke with her on the phone a month ago and she was in good spirit saying all her treatments went well. Our hearts go out to you and yours! You were blessed with such a loving mother!

Connie Beachler - Sep 16, 2024

Sue was my 7th grade English teacher in 1966. I contacted her 53 years later (five years ago) upon seeing she was on Facebook, and I thanked her profusely for instilling in me the love of reading, writing and the English language. We soon forged a friendship that grew ever closer, sharing long visits and heartfelt talks each time I returned to Westerville (from Kansas City) to visit my family. As does everyone who knew and loved Sue, I feel her loss deeply. My condolences especially go to her family and lifetime friends. I hope your many cherished memories of (and with) her sustain and lift you.

Les Randolph - Sep 14, 2024

Rhonda and I were so pleased to have Sue visit our home two days before her 86th birthday. We spent time in our garden and appreciating the nature around us. Sue was a long time friend and we will miss our two hour breakfasts at IHOP where we shared books and our lives. Ted and Patrick, we are so sorry for your loss but know you will have a lifetime of wonderful memories.

I taught at Blendon with Sue. She had such a vibrant personality and always kept my spirits up. I was a new special ed. teacher and she helped me persevere some pretty rough days. She was truly a cheerleader for students and fellow teachers; an exceptional friend and compassionate teacher!

Diane - Sep 13, 2024

One of the many conversations I had with Sue was one about what quotations that were truly important in the Bible. Two that said to us that we were to be "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world." Sue was both, and I am eternally grateful that I was able to see what those quotes meant. Sue lived them. Thank you dear friend for what you have taught me.

Marva Poe - Sep 13, 2024

Dear Ted and Patrick, I am so very sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. I can remember her from when I was younger, being Aunt Maddie’s best friend. I remember how much joy the two of you brought to Aunt Maddie’s life as she cared for you while your parents worked. We were constantly hearing funny stories about things you said and things you did. I remember how Aunt Maddie would light up when she would tell me she talked to Sue. Losing our parents is one of the hardest things we have to do in this life. My heart, thoughts and prayers are with you both, as well as your families. Love, Marva

Meg Farahay - Sep 13, 2024

To those beloved of Sue, I wanted to pass along my love and gratitude for having Sue as a part of my life. My mother (Diane) considered Sue her dearest friend, and as such, made Sue an integral part of the Farahays' lives for the entirity of my and my brother's lives . We cherished her presence at family events, farming days, and myriad times that she brought love and often something delicious with her. My heart is with you and I look forward to celebrating what a wonderful life she lived with you in October.

Sue Pryor - Sep 12, 2024

Sue was my 7th grade teacher in English at Hanby. She was an unforgettable teacher. I learned so much for her. Later I also taught with her in Westerville schools and from time to time I ran into her on a walk. My sympathies go to you all.

Nancy Keyser Heckman - Sep 12, 2024

Always a kind soul and so easy to converse with, Sue made our family gatherings from yesteryear a real pleasure. As a cousin by marriage, we saw each other infrequently, but I always looked forward to our visits. Having recently reconnected, she was quite interested to catch up on all matters family. She will be tenderly missed. Prayers for the family.

Connie Myers Mentzer - Sep 12, 2024

As one of the three Janes I will miss Sue more than words can express. We started kindergarten together and graduated from high school and Otterbein together. We were also neighbors. So many good times and memories. God bless you and your family.
