D’ANDREA

Sonny D’Andrea, 66, of Westerville passed away Friday, August 4, 2017 after a short and aggressive battle with cancer. Sonny was a 1973 graduate of Otterbein College, where he served as an athletic trainer for the football team for four years. After graduating, Sonny obtained a Master’s Degree from Ohio State and went on to teach elementary physical education for over a decade at Lincoln Elementary in Gahanna. There, Sonny developed a one-of-a-kind gymnastics program and was recognized as “Teacher of the Year” for his efforts both inside and outside of the classroom. While still teaching at Lincoln Elementary, Sonny, along with his wife and brother, bought and began operating four Dairy Queen stores in the Central Ohio area. Although Sonny eventually left the education field after entering the Dairy Queen business, he never stopped being a teacher. For nearly 40 years, Sonny used his role at the Dairy Queen to teach young people about the importance of hard work and to help develop in his “DQ alums” the life skills needed to be successful. Sonny also set an example of giving back to the community through his nearly 30 years of ushering at St. Paul Church, supporting Otterbein and DeSales athletics, promoting junior golf, and assisting those in need through the Westerville Area Resource Ministry. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 40 years, Rose, his son Joe, brother Bob, sister-in-law Marcia, cousins Tom, Mike, Carol, and Diane Petti, cousin Peggie Lyn Jones, by his extended family, and by his many friends. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, August 8th from 4-8 p.m. at MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 9th at 10:30 a.m., St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 313 N. State Street in Westerville, Rev. Fr. Charles Klinger, celebrant. Interment Blendon Central Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to St. Francis DeSales High School or to the Otterbein “O” Club.

Dear Rose, Joe, Bob & Marcia
It was so good to see all of you again, and to finally meet Joe. My friends, Teresa, Chris, Beanie and I, are honored to be your 1st DQ girls. Our life long friendships began working for you, and we are truly grateful for that, and all the memories! We learned from the best, and developed great worth ethics, that we practice to this day. Our very 1st jobs were at the Dairy Queen, and working there every summer of our high school years were the best! I was privileged to work at all 4 of your stores. It meant a lot that Bob remembered my specialty, the Sundae Supreme 🙂 As I shared with you, I will never forget Sonny’s face when he got his arm stuck in the Mr. Misty machine up to his shoulder! His sense of humor was such, that we really weren’t sure of he was stuck or not, but it was hilarious. Especially because he was able to extricate himself before we had to call the fire department. God Bless Sonny, and all of you. Sonny will forever be in my heart. Thanks for the memories….
Much love,
Laura Jordan Martin

My prayers for your family. I’m sorry I didn’t read the sad news in time to pay my respects in person. I worked at the Westerville DQ from 1985 to 1994 through college. Sonny always looked out for me at night, making sure I had a ride home, or giving me a ride in his yellow Corvette. He was kind and funny and I know will be deeply missed.

Rose & Joe:
Please know how sorry we were to hear of Sonny’s passing. So glad John & I were able to visit with Sonny just 2 weeks ago. John treasures the time that Sonny, Larry & he played golf together @ JCC. GREAT father, husband & man. May he now rest in peace.

Mike Griffin - Aug 6, 2017

Dear Mrs. D’Andrea and Joe,
I am so sorry for your incredible loss. Mr. D’Andrea was a great man and someone I had the privilege to know both in the eyes of a kid and an adult. His sense of humor and straightforwardness will be sorely missed. You both are in my family’s thoughts and prayers.

Rose,
I am so sorry for your loss. Sonny was such an innovator and champion of the children he taught. I loved our volleyball games at Lincoln and the pizza in the cafeteria. Judy Walls was just talking to me about visiting Sonny. Wish we had made it sooner. How about all those horrible funeral flowers he would put in Mr. Rarey’s office!?! Sonny always brought a smile to my face. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Anna Gygi - Aug 6, 2017

So sorry for your loss. I am Kimber mom and Sonny was so great to her all these years. He will be truly missed

Brian - Aug 5, 2017

Rose, I’m so sorry for your loss. Sonny was a giant of a man who, I’m sure you know, was loved by so many. He made a huge impact in my life and I will always be thankful that our paths crossed. Those days working along side him as his student teacher were good days. Sonny took me under his wing and took care of me during a time in my life when I was just trying to find my way. Who knows where I would be today had I not met Sonny. I have so many fond memories of him and my heart aches thinking about the grief you must feel. Find comfort in the fact that you will be together again someday. God Bless, Brian

Sharon villavecer - Aug 5, 2017

Dear Rose, Joe and family, we are so sad to hear that Sonny has passed away. Virgil, the boys and I have so many fond memories of the time we spent with all of you. The boys always remember visiting the Dairy Queen and Sonny giving them treats for our freezer. They loved to go there to get the chicken and gravy meal for dinner and get special attention from Sonny and a treat if they finished their meal. It was so nice to always see you at the Otterbein basketball games and functions too as well as at St. Paul’s too. Sonny was the best. You all are very loved by us. Sending our regards, Virgil, Sharon Michael, Daniel and Rosalina Villavecer
