Robert Roberts
Sunrise March 26th 1942 - Sunset May 24th 2024
Robert Roberts was born on March 26th 1942 to Mary Bernadette and Andrew William Roberts in Gary, Indiana. Robert was the youngest of their 5 children. The family joke is that their parents ran out of middle names and so he was simply known as Robert Roberts. The family moved to Grandview Heights, Ohio when Robert was very young.
Robert had a happy childhood with his loving family and was very close with his cousin Albert James Roberts Jr. who was one year older. They grew up together and shared a love of trains. They had many adventures together in the local train yards which sometimes ended in mischief. They were the best of friends. Bob also loved to play his drum set.
Robert met Susan Elizabeth Saint Clair at Jerry's Drive In located in Columbus, Ohio. They were married at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Upper Arlington, Ohio on November 4th, 1967. They were married for 56 years. Robert honorably served in the Ohio National Guard and was placed on Active Duty during the Columbus Ohio riots in July 1969.
Bob was a dedicated family man who worked extremely hard to provide for his family. He worked at Burgess and Niple Engineering and Architecture in Columbus Ohio, Lennox International Climate Control Solutions in Columbus Ohio, Gardner Incorporated Lawn and Garden Parts Distribution in Columbus Ohio and the United States Postal Service Main Distribution Center in Columbus Ohio.
Robert became Susan's full time caregiver in 2014 after her 5th stroke left her in need of 24 hour care. He put her needs before his own and unfortunately he neglected the management of his Diabetes and Heart Disease.
Robert did an excellent job caring for Susan and their 2 beloved rescue dogs, Bailey and Barney, their house, their yard, their gardens, grocery shopping and preparing their meals. He managed all that workload until he had a full cardiac arrest on September 16th 2023. The incredible Upper Arlington paramedics were able to bring him back from a full code. Robert used the last 8 months of his life to learn to accept the loving help and support from his family and from the wonderful staff at Bickford of Upper Arlington assisted living community where Robert and Susan moved to in March 2024.
Robert had a 1958 Corvette that his father helped him buy. Bob and Sue took the Corvette on their honeymoon to Canada and Niagara Falls. He rebuilt the engine and lovingly restored his beloved Corvette over the years. Bob and Sue took the Corvette to many cruise-ins over the years along with her 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza that he also lovingly maintained over the years.
Bob loved taking care of their indoor plants and their gardens. He was a master repairer, craftsman, gifted artist and creator. He made remarkable wood carvings and other pieces that his family cherishes. He was an avid model railroad enthusiast. He built an amazing H.O. Scale model railroad layout that covers half of their basement. He was able to create just about anything you could imagine. His train layout has rivers, boats, mountains, tunnels, factories, bridges, cities, farms and tiny details to discover like animals, mountain climbers repelling down a cliff and even a replica of the Pontiac Phoenix car Susan drove in the 1980's and 1990's. Robert was a member of the Janis Center Model Railroad Club in Columbus Ohio until he was no longer able to leave Susan for long stretches of time. He cherished the friends he made in the club over the years.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Susan Elizabeth; son, James Christopher Roberts; daughter, Natalie Anne Roberts; grandchildren, Marley Elizabeth and Blaine Andrew McDonald; sister-in-law, Carolyn Roberts, and many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary Roberts, sisters, Jeanette Rice and Mary Jane Ronemus, brothers, Andrew and Warren Roberts, nephews, Michael and David Roberts, and his cousin Albert Roberts Jr.
Family and Friends are invited to visit during calling hours at the Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, Wednesday from 4-6 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery's Chapel, 9571 High Street, Lewis Center, OH Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Interment at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
