Richard (Dick) Lowell Windle, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 12, 2024.
Dick was born on August 5, 1931 in West Jefferson, Ohio, to his late father, Howard Windle and mother, Thelma Gardner Windle. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 70 plus years, JoAnn (Price) Windle, his five loving children, Jim (Cathy), Kenny (Karen), Doug (Tara), Keith (Nanette), and Deeann (Keith) Bogle, 14 grandchildren, 6 grandchildrens spouses, and 15 great grandchildren, with 2 more on the way! The extended family totals forty-seven, of which he and JoAnn were very proud! Also survived by devoted brother, Bob (Ruth) Windle, Nieces Katie (Brett) Cohen, and Susan Windle. Cousins Nancy Dunbar, David McKinley and Kay Markley. Sisters-in-law Eula Gay Price and Diane Price, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
As a lifetime resident of Central Ohio, he loved sharing stories about his early childhood days on his grandparents farm. He was a 1949 graduate of Hilliards High School. He was quite the athlete; a nine time varsity H letter winner in football, basketball and baseball.
He graduated from THE Ohio State University in 1953 with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration and Industrial Management. Immediately after graduating from O.S.U. he served in the U.S. Army as Second Lieutenant in a tank battalion supporting the 44th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington.
When eligible to vote in their first presidential election in 1952, Dick and JoAnn both voted for Dwight D. Eisenhower. As the newly elected president, Eisenhower backed up his promise by ending the Korean War in 1953. As a result, all of Dicks time served in the military was stateside.
After completing his military service, Dick was employed for seven years as a Methods and Time Standards Analyst at Jeffrey Manufacturing Company. He spent the rest of his career as an Industrial Engineer in Plant Maintenance and Aircraft Facilities at Rockwell International. He retired in 1989 after twenty-eight years of service.
He was a long time member of New Albany High School sports and band booster clubs, including serving as treasurer and president during the years between 1969 and 1986.
For fifty-six years, Dick was an Usher at Ohio State football games at portal 18B, missing only five games. The last twenty-five of those years he enjoyed ushering alongside his son, Doug.
Dick and JoAnn always supported their children and grandchildren by attending numerous activities, such as football, basketball, volleyball, softball, lacrosse, swimming, marching band, track, drill team, show choir, cheerleading and school plays. He also served as an advisor for the local 4-H chapter. In later years, Dick enjoyed viewing high school, college and pro sports on TV. He also loved woodworking, fishing, golf and jigsaw puzzles.
Dick and JoAnn enjoyed traveling, including a trip to the 1975 Rose Bowl, Caribbean and Alaskan cruises. They were thrilled with a hot air balloon ride in celebration of their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary. Other special vacations included Hawaii and several visits to Branson, Missouri. They also enjoyed traveling around Lake Michigan, Boston, the New England States, as well as New York City.
Special times that Dick always looked forward to were family gatherings on Walnut Street including Christmas celebrations, camping, tractor rides, summer picnics and poolside family fun.
Dick and JoAnn attended Central College Presbyterian Church and in later years, New Albany United Methodist Church.
He and his children wish to thank Dr. Brittany Adamic at OhioHealth, Danbury Senior Living and Capital City Hospice, especially Dr. Whitt, Nurse Amy Barton, Aide Emily Waugh, Social Worker Penny Gillett, Aide Maimouna Keita, Pastor Jim, Chaplain Gary Brose, and the warm and kind staff at Danbury. They were extremely devoted to Dick and continue to love and care for JoAnn, for which our family is sincerely grateful.
A Celebration of Life will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, February 17th at Moreland Funeral Home with visitation from 2-4 PM prior to the service.
