Mary Lou Prouty

Mary Lou Prouty, age 82, of Westerville, Ohio passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at the Gables of Westerville.  Preceding her in death were her parents; Ernest Paul & Rosa Lucile Widmayer; brother, Jo Ed Widmayer; her son, Jeffrey Dwane Prouty; and her former husband, Elmer Dwane Prouty.  

She leaves behind one daughter, Joy Lynn Dietz (Doug); 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.  Sister-in-law, Barbara Widmayer; 2 nieces, Kathy Brenner and Connie Dornan (Robert); along with other extended family members, and long time family friend Felicia Bernardo, who was instrumental in helping Mary Lou navigate the journey of memory loss.

Mary Lou had a deep compassionate love for the City of Westerville, championing many causes focused on the preservation of many historical locations within the city, specifically the historic Uptown District, both the Hanby House & Stoner House, and the Everal Barn and Homestead at Heritage Park.  She served twenty years on Westerville City Council, four of those years serving as Westerville’s first woman mayor.

Another passion she was noted for were her flowers and gardens at her Victorian style home on North State Street, along with the changing of the decorative seasonal displays that adorned both her house and yard.

Visitation will be held on Friday May 29th from 2-4 PM and from 6-8 PM at Moreland Funeral Home 55 East Schrock Road, Westerville, Ohio 43081 where a funeral service will be held Saturday May 30th at 10 AM with internment to immediately follow at Blendon Central Cemetery, 6350 South Hempstead Road, Westerville, Ohio.  In-lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either the Gables of Westerville, Attn: Activity Dept., 131 Moss Road, Westerville, OH 43082 or to the Alzheimer Association at the following link:
