Elaine Coleman - Apr 27, 2022

I write this with sincere sadness to learn of the death of my Friend, Mary Frances Crown. I had the privilege of working with Fran for over ten years at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She was most definitely the hardest working colleague that I ever had the opportunity to work beside. We shared so many good times during those years. She told me about her family and how close she was to her sister and brother. When Katrina destroyed her home she made the decision to move to Ohio to be close to her brother. I was so happy to see her when she would return for a visit. I have missed her, but did not and will not forget her. I think of her every April Fool's Day! To her Family: My Family Loved Fran Crown and Our Thoughts and Prayers are with You.

Mary Frances was such an extraordinary women and feel she greatly enriched my life and others. She was always so kind and willing to help anyone. She shared some amazing stories with me of her journey through life. She was happy she had decided to become a nurse and join the Air Force. She said she never regretted that decision. She said when she was sent to Viet Nam to help build the hospital - she witnessed the death of so many young men and they helped save many too. She said there was such a strong bond that formed with their team. Their group of close friends was quite large. That is how she met her husband (Dick) She told me she was surprised when he asked her to marry him because she he no idea he had those feelings towards her. She told me it wasn't that easy for a women in the military or even in the medical profession in those days. For her to become a Colonel - I knew she had to be an extraordinary person - INDEED! She told me Dick passed a year or two before Hurricane Katrina had destroyed her home. That is when she relocated to Westerville to be close to her brother Joe. She joined the Church of The Messiah - that's how I met her. She was so active & involved in many groups, committees, organizations, charities, clubs, Bible and Sunday School classes. She also had a God given gift of playing the piano. She also volunteered her nursing skills at the VA Hospital, helped out in the nursery and made casseroles for the homeless. She loved her family, her church family, neighbors and numerous friends. Mary Frances was a strong Christian, a giver, caretaker, a healer, a Patriot and an amazing friend. I know she will receive many rewards in Heaven and is Happy and Rejoicing! She will be missed by so many! Goodby for now my Beautiful Friend!

On behalf of the Society of Air Force Nurses, please know we are mourning with you the death of our friend and colleague, retired Colonel Mary Frances "Fran" (Gore) Crown. She was a remarkable woman who made such a difference in the lives of so many others during her own journey through life. Fran was a Charter & Lifetime member of the Society. A donation in her honor & memory will be made to the Military Women's Memorial that stands at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. She will certainly be missed by so many, and Fran will not be forgotten by this community of Air Force nurses. Linda J. Stierle, Brigadier General USAF (Retired)
