Mary Carol Barr, 84, of Westerville, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012 at St. Ann’s Hospital. She was born in St. Louis, MO on January 15, 1928 to parents the late Dean and Harriett (Pelley) Kerr. Mary Carol spent her early years in Scio and Columbus before moving to Westerville in 1939. She was preceded in death by husband Gordon Barr, daughter Susan Dunphy Hollis and grandson Casey Weiss. Mary Carol was a graduate of Westerville High School and received her nursing degree from Duke University in 1948. She received her BSN from Otterbein College in 1983 and her MSN from Otterbein in 1998 at the age of 70. Mary Carol worked as a registered nurse for more than 40 years before retiring from Riverside Methodist Hospital where she worked evenings on the oncology floor. A lifelong music lover, she sang in the chapel choir at Duke, played piano throughout her life and was a charter member of the Westerville Song Spinners. She was also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and a founding member of the Westerville Beta Chapter of the Ohio Child Conservation League. Friendships were dear to her as she enjoyed monthly meetings with the Lunch Bunch from the Westerville High School Class of 1945. Mary Carol is survived by daughter Deborah (John) Spieler of Athens, AL, daughter Alice Weiss of Sandusky, OH, son John Thomas (Sandi) of Mt. Vernon, OH and daughter Martha (Greg) Hippler of Canal Winchester, OH; grandchildren John (Maggie), Lura, Cody, Cate, Cameron, Anna, Mary and Grace, great grandchildren Lily, Gigi and Jack and sister Martha (Tom) Bay of Dublin, OH. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 3 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 41W. College Ave. in Westerville with a Memorial Service to be held at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Mark Gauen officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary Carol’s memory can be made to the Westerville Symphony at Otterbein University. www.morelandfuneralhome.com
