Mary Ann Fonow

Mary passed away on June 22, 2026 in Westerville, OH, where she lived for the past several years with her son and daughter-in-law. Mary was born in Bethany, WV, August 12, 1928. She lived in Steubenville, OH most of her life and was an active member of her community and church, serving for several years on St. Peter’s Catholic Church Council. Mary was also a long time area businesswoman.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband James R. Fonow, her parents, Nick and Belle Villies. She was the last surviving of six dearly beloved siblings including brothers John, August (Gus), and Angelo Villes and sisters Helen Hesske, Ethel Bazak, and Pauline Maragos.

Mary lived 97 joyful years as the matriarch of a loving family. Left behind to carry on her strong legacy are her three children, Mary Margaret (Corinne Dillon) Fonow, James (Karen Lucke) Fonow, Ann Marie (Timothy) Barrett, her four grandchildren, Ben Upton, Jessica (James) Dawso, James (Alexis) Fonow and Elizabeth Barrett, and her three great-grandchildren, Finn and Nora Dawso and Jacob Fonow.

Mary was a devout Catholic and lived her faith daily. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on June 26, 2026 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Westerville, OH.
