John Anthony Bien, 74, of Westerville, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Parkside Village after a courageous, year-long battle with lung cancer. Born June 15, 1937, in Cincinnati, he was one of nine children of John and Anita Bien. He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Carol (Sturm) and their four children, Linda Wagner of Syracuse, Sandra Stitzlein of Chicago, Daniel Bien of Sammamish, Wash., and William Bien of Mountain View, Calif.; seven siblings, Mary Kist, James Bien, Martha Beerman, Julie Niehoff, William Bien, Stephen Bien and Thomas Bien. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Emily and Grace Wagner; Maya and Kylie Stitzlein; Abigail, Sam, Johnny, Lily and Katie Bien; and Brandon and Kaela Bien. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and brother Frederick. John retired in 1999 from Standard Register after more than 40 years as a salesman of hospital and business forms. He previously worked for UARCO. John was a 1955 graduate of Purcell High School in Silverton and a 1959 graduate of Xavier University in Cincinnati, where he earned a bachelor?s degree in English. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Westerville. The loves of his life were his family, grandchildren and golf. He played for many years at Minerva Park in the Knights of Columbus league and at Blackhawk Golf Club in Galena, where he was a charter member. He was proud of the many years he was a single-digit handicap golfer, relished the magical day the ball found the hole in one stroke, and enjoyed every round he played with his many close friends, particularly ”The Old Farts” at Blackhawk. He looks forward to spending eternity finding every fairway and making nearly every putt. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Parkside Village for the loving care provided to John during his final days. Friends may visit Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME 55 East Schrock Road, Westerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michaels Catholic Church 5750 North High Street, Worthington. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
