James Edward (Eddie) Haas, age 89, passed away September 13 2012 at St Ann’s Hospital after an extended illness. He was born Aug 31 1923 to his late parents Samuel Peter and Mollie Belle Evans Haas in Linn, Mo. Eddie was orphaned at an early age and lived with his Uncle John in Versailles Mo. until he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 and the US Navy in 1941. He met and married his wife, Dolores A. DeStefano Haas, in New York City in 1945. She preceded him in death Jan. 13, 2008. He served in the armed forces for 28 years until retiring to Tucson, AZ, a Master Sergeant. His military service included tours of duty in the Navy, Army and Air Force. He continued government service in Tucson, working for the US Border Patrol. Eddie was a world traveler and lived many places during his service which included 8 months as a Sky Marshal while in the Air Force. He was extremely proud of his military service and was a collector of items from the countries where he and his family served. He was an expert marksman on Air Force rifle teams, and softball player for his squadron teams. Eddie became an avid bowler in Arizona and Brooklyn where he and his wife moved late in life. He came to Westerville after his wife died and has lived here since 2008. He is survived by his two loving sons; John (Laurie) of Columbus, Ohio and Wayne (Wanda) of Hayes, Virginia; grandchildren surviving are Jason, Jesse (Sarah), Hannah and Emma Haas, and two great-granddaughters, Domenica and Gianna Wilson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday September 18th at 7 p.m. at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME; 55 East Schrock Road, Westerville, OH with visitation one hour before the service. He will be interred at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington DC.
