Howard C. Freund, age 90, of Westerville, passed away December 25, 2023. Born in Calumet, WI. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force as a Radar Operator from 1952-1956, stationed in Newfoundland and Osceola, WI. He leveraged that experience in a 30-year career as an Air Traffic Manager with the Federal Aviation Administration. After retiring from the FAA, Howard worked several years for H.R. Block, in addition to expertly hanging wallpaper and reupholstering furniture for friends and businesses in Westerville. Howard is survived by daughter, Susan of Westerville; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Erin, Napa, CA and daughter-in-law, Elaine of Westerville. He has three grandchildren, Steven Freund and Annelise Freund of Norton, MA, and Christopher and wife, Cristina Wilson of Westerville. Preceded in death by the love of his life, Pat, his partner for 61 years in marriage, his son David, brothers Harold and Robert, and sister, Ella Mae.
Howard will be greatly missed by the many people that had the good fortune of being touched by his humor, gentle kindness, intelligence and friendship during his rich life. Alongside Pat, he volunteered many years at the Westerville Senior Center and together they were awarded Westerville Volunteers of the Year in 2009 for their dedication. Howard sang with the tenors in the St. Paul Catholic Church Choir for an amazing 48 years, finally putting away his choir book at the grand age of 87. He and Pat loved traveling and exploring new places, embarking on over 20 trips throughout the U.S. and internationally with the Westerville Senior Center. Howard was an avid collector and authority on German beer steins, and thoroughly enjoyed the beverage traditionally served in those vessels, preferably accompanied by a slice of rhubarb pie.
Friends may call at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, December 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 313 N. The Klumpp Family sends love and prayers to the Freund Family. Some of my fondest memories was Thanksgiving day as a child going to the Freund house for Thanksgiving dinner with the Freunds, Robbins & Stapletons. Always a joy to look in awe at Mr. Freunds German Beer Steins. Thank you for such wonderful memories of you and your Family.

Susan, It was so good to see you at my son’s wedding. It had been many years. I am saddened to see your dad has passed. I remember having him reupholster dining room chairs for me many years ago. Your family will be in my prayers. Take care.
