Harold E. Westerman died at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville, OH on April 1, 2016, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia C. (Church) Westerman, daughter Darla D. Lazare, son Steven D. Westerman (Rainy), grandson Chapin Silva, granddaughter Anne Brensley Westerman, two brothers Don Westerman of Upper Sandusky, OH and Jim Westerman of Evanston, IL, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry L. and Matilda (Rusch) Westerman, brothers; Robert Westerman (Edna), Robert Harley Westerman, Lewis (infant) and Norman Westerman, sisters-in-law Bess (Riley) Westerman, Virginia (Berg) Westerman and Geraldine ( LoBiondo) Westerman.Harold was born in Little Sandusky, OH on November 14, 1927. He was a graduate of Eden High School, class of 1947. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at Anchorage, Alaska and San Bernardino, CA before being honorably discharged in 1952. He trained as a meat cutter and spent many years working for grocery stores and eventually opened Westerman’s Meats store in The Flagg Center in Westerville in the early 1980s. He was also a businessman with the Clark Oil Company for four years. Harold later went to work for the City of Westerville in the Electric Division and the Parks and Recreation Division. During his time with Parks and Recreation, he helped plant many of the trees throughout Westerville, helped build several of the city parks and spent many hours mowing them during the summers. He retired in 1993 and along with his wife, Virginia, loved to take road trips around the U.S. He spent the rest of his time “tinkering” around the house and gardening, and cruising the neighborhood on his John Deere riding mower. Friends may call at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME 55 East Schrock Road Westerville, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with service at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday April 6, 2016. Additional visitation will be held at Lucas Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, OH Thursday with interment in Old Mission Cemetery in Upper Sandusky, OH.
