Edward “Ed” Powell, Jr., age 74, of Venice, Florida pased away on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 surrounded by his loving family after a hard fought battle with kidney disease. Ed graduated from Aquinas High School in 1959. He worked on the River Patrol and then for the Columbus Police Department as a patrolman, detective and liaison officer for 22 years. Ed, with his mother, sister and family owned and operated Broadview Healthcare Center, a long-term care facility where he was administrator for the family business that was in operation for 62 years. Ed lost his father at age 12 and contributes the support and guidance that George “Mannie” and Mary Phelps provided in shaping the man he became. He loved sports and actively played football, basketball and baseball and was also a Golden Glove boxer as a young man. Survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy; daughters, Kelly (Craig) McGee and Renee (Rodd) Hott; sons, Edward (Ingrid) Powell, III and George Powell; grandchildren, Bryan and Christine Lake, Joseph and Michelle Whitehead, Harrison and Haley Hott, Edward IV and Ninamarie Powell; great-grandchildren, Jordan Williams and Jaden Lake; sister, Betty Powell; nephew, Ronald DeAngelo, and Deborah Moore; and his beloved Labrador Bentley. Preceded in death by his father, Edward J. Powell, Sr., mother, Irene Powell-Gallucci and niece, Melinda Stone. The family wants to extend a special heart felt “thank you” to John Cassan who went above and beyond and truly defines a best friend. The family would like to also thank friends and family for their support, words of encouragement and especially the touching memories of our father that were twitted, texted and communicated. Friends may call at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, Sunday, March 2nd from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 313 N. State Street, Westerville, Monday, March 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Fr. David E. Gwinner, celebrant. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Tribute Account 35411286, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

I have known Eddy before high school, played football with him at Aquinas, and softball on the Police Department. Ed was one of the Basketball players that went to Florida to represent the police department to play in the Law Enforcement Olympics. Since we couldn’t make the services we decided to go to the jetty today , had a hot dog , watched the dolphins and boats knowing that’s what Eddie would be doing with us so we spent the afternoon paying our respect to our friend Eddie.
