Douglas Alexander Mackin, 28, of Westerville, Ohio, passed away on May 15, 2025. Though his journey was marked by struggle, it was also filled with deep love, unwavering loyalty and moments of profound joy. Dougs life is a reminder that behind every battle is a beautiful soul who mattered deeply to many. Born on May 7th, 1997, Doug was a beloved father, husband, son, brother and friend whose strength, dedication, and love touched all who knew him. He graduated from Westerville Central High School and the Delaware Area Career Center in 2015, where he studied power sports and diesel technology fields that matched his natural skill for mechanics and fixing things. In 2016, Doug married his high school sweetheart, Alex (Polito). Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Army and the couple moved to Missouri, where they welcomed their first daughter, Mia Rose, in 2017. The following year, Doug was deployed to Afghanistan, serving his country with strength, courage, and dedication. After his discharge, Doug and his family returned home to Ohio, where they welcomed their second daughter, Ava Nicole, in 2019.Becoming a father was Dougs greatest joy, and he cherished every moment with his girls. Doug found joy in lifes simple moments. He loved fishing, riding his motorcycle, working on cars, and fixing things-always eager to lend a hand or figure out how to make something better. Most of all, he cherished spending time outside with his daughters, creating memories of love and laughter they will carry forever.
Doug loved hard and never met a stranger. His warm smile, sense of humor, generous spirit, and his ability to make anyone feel at home are just a few of the many things that made him unforgettable. He brought people together and lived life with an open heart. Just like his favorite color, orange, he was bright, bold, full of energy and impossible to forget. Doug stood out in the best possible way. Dougs life was a mix of service, love and struggle and he fought to be present for the ones he loved most. His story is one of both joy and pain, and his family shares it with hope to honor his memory and to remind others that addiction touches many lives, but it never defines a person's worth. He will be remembered for his unwavering love, big hearted nature and the way he made people feel truly seen and valued. Above all, Doug was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beautiful daughters Mia and Ava, wife Alex, parents Cindy and Tim, his brother, Tyler and Grandma, Shirley Mackin. He also leaves behind in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Don and Loris Gilbert.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Doug to benefit his daughters, Mia and Ava. Supporting their future is a meaningful way to carry on Dougs love, hopes, and dreams for them. Contributions can be directed through Moreland Funeral Home, with checks made payable to the funeral home and noting For the daughters of Douglas Mackin in the memo.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday May 24th, 2025 at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E Schrock Rd Westerville, Ohio 43081 from 2:00pm-4:00pm. In remembrance of Doug, guests are invited to wear orange as a tribute to the vibrant life he lived.
