Visitation
Saturday, November 4th from 2-4 p.m. at Moreland Funeral Home
Crystal Belle Vote Coulter, 93, passed away in her home in Westerville, Ohio, on October 20, 2023. Crystal was preceded in death by her husband, John (Jack) Knox Coulter, Jr. by almost forty years and daughter-in-law, Kathryn Zupp Coulter. She is survived by son, John Coulter; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Lisa Coulter, and daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Greg Sanders, as well as her five grandsons: Sam, Jack, Adam, Max, and Nick.
Crystal and Jack met at Transylvania College and married in 1950. Their pursuit of education took them on to Indiana University where Crystal worked in the president's office for President Herman B. Wells while pursuing a masters degree. Jack accepted a position as an English professor at Otterbein College, they moved to Westerville. From there, Crystal completed her course work and earned a masters degree in social work and Jack completed his Ph.D in English Literature.
Throughout her life, Crystal was dedicated to serving others. One of her most cherished beliefs was a woman's right to make decisions about her own reproductive health and family planning. She worked in a variety of roles during her career as a social worker. Early in her career, she worked for Planned Parenthood. Later she worked placing children into adoptive homes, and then in a county mental health clinic in Delaware, Ohio, as a counselor. She also counseled patients in private practice in Westerville.
Crystal was born on the family farm in Allegan County, Michigan, on July 20, 1930, not long after the beginning of the Great Depression. Crystal was the first child of Terressa (Boylan) Vote and Harold Vote. She is survived by her two sisters, Phyllis Rice and Nancy Vote, and brother, Dale Vote and his wife, Donalyn; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. For a time, Crystal returned to Michigan where she built a house on Baseline Lake in order to be closer to her own mother for the years prior to her mother's death. She returned to Westerville following her mother's passing.
Despite Jack's death forty years ago, Crystal remained close to his family as well. She is survived by Jack's sisters, Belle Tribby, Betty Hucke, and Nancy Colcord; as well as by brother-in-law, Jerry Abrecht and sister-in-law, Jenny Coulter. She enjoyed following the lives of numerous nieces and nephews and their families on Facebook, in addition to visiting with them at the Coulter Family Reunions which happen every five years. Most recently, she spent a week with the Coulter clan at Cumberland Falls State Park in July where eighty-six family members were in attendance.
Crystal's love for education and Otterbein College (now University), kept her active long into her retirement. She enjoyed theater productions, lectures, and Otterbein's Lifelong Learning Community classes - most recently a Shakespeare class. During the pandemic, Crystal wrote a book chronicling Jack's time at and his contributions to Otterbein, which was published in 2022. In addition to Otterbein, she enjoyed the company of her neighbors and friends in the Hoff Woods Condominium Community.
Crystal's family will hold a visitation for friends and family at Moreland Funeral Home 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, Ohio, 43081, on Saturday, November 4th from 2 - 4PM. All are welcome to drop by.
Condolences

We really enjoyed getting to know Crystal over the past 20+ years. Her grandson Adam and our son Cameron were friends all through school. Crystal would come to the boys sports functons and birthday parties etc throughout the years and provide transportation to and from events. Crystal was always great to talk to, even though our opinions differed on different subjects, we cared and loved each other, we respected each other and still had great laughs together everytime we were together! I last saw her last summer at a graduation party for our daughter, she was so happy to be there and she hugged me so tight. I will so miss her letters in her Christmas cards each year. Crystal was one of the sweetest persons I know and we will miss her dearly.

I met your mom in 2021 and worked with her on her book. She amazed me from the moment we met. She was organized and detail-oriented and had so much to share. I looked forward to our meetings. She had a sense of humor and we always ended up laughing. While listening to her stories and sharing mine with her, I experienced her empathy and compassion firsthand. I am grateful to have met her. Sending peace and comfort to your family.

My deepest condolences to Crystal's large extended family. She believed in social justice and kindness for all, and she lived those beliefs. I loved talking with her, loved her stories and memories, loved her letters about family and friends. We shared a deep love of learning, and I will miss her, as will many others. Thank you, Crystal, for shining your love on so many, many of us.

I am so sorry for the loss of Crystal. She was an amazing woman and there couldn't have been a better Mother-in-Law for my sister. She not only accepted Kathy as family but she also accepted her entire family with open arms. Only in the past couple years she stopped including a letter in every Christmas card catching everyone up on what had been going on in her life and with her family the past year. There had to be a reason because this was so important to her. She was very proud of everyone. I miss receiving those letters as I am many miles from home and can't learn first hand. All of her family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers. The world lost a wonderfully amazing woman.

Crystal was my neighbor and friend. I enjoyed visiting her and listening to her stories of her husband Jack as well the rest of her family. The stories of her family reunions were epic and I’m thrilled she was able to go to the most recent one in KY. I had the privilege of attending her 90th birthday party and enjoyed meeting some of her family and friends she thought so highly of. I will miss seeing Crystal working in her garden and popping over to sit on my porch to catch me up on her most recent adventures. May you rest in peace my friend.

I am so sorry for the family's loss. She was truly a remrkable woman. I couldn't believe how active she was at her age. Her memory was remarkable. When she came to visit Lisa & Greg I remember the fun of playing games with her. With her passing it is a little darker on earth but a new star appears in the sky.
