Chuck Turner, Suzi and I knew Chuck and Sally for at least 12 years, maybe more. We met at the Kroger’s, New Albany, wine tastings. We met there weekly on Friday’s we met there with our group, and we had great conversations, and fun drinking wine. We learned about wine and each other. Chuck was a Marine as am I and this was the source of endless banter. We teased each other about the Corps, shooting and scuba diving. Chuck had a great history of diving, in places like the St. Lawrence Seaway, Atlantic Ocean and many, many dives in the Caribbean on the Aggressor Fleet of Liveaboard, Diving tours. I was a scout swimmer /diver in the Corps, so we had endless conversations about diving and various dives. Chuck’s favorite place to dive in Ohio was the White Star Quarry and we heard about many of his exploits there. Chuck was also an avid fisherman and hunter. This provided endless discussion about various deer, elk, and other hunts. Fishing provided our group with stories of fishing trips, the wilds of Wisconsin and Michigan and Louisiana along with many boar hunting trips there in the wilds of Louisiana. These stories were fascinating, and we will long remember the wonderful camaraderie Chuck and Sally both provided to our wine group. As our group came to know Chuck and Sally better our group began meeting at each other’s homes and the F.O.E. to chat, laugh, play cards and of course drink good bourbon and yes wine too. Friendships deepened during these years, and we all came to know Chuck as a generous, kind, affable friend who cared about his family, grandchildren, and friends alike. He was always available to lend a hand to friends. He helped me cut trees down on a few occasions and would always lend his expertise to wood projects I had going where his tools and workshop had the needed items, jointers, planers, table saws and drill presses to name a few. My son, grandsons and I went up to a farm with Chuck where he often hunted, to shoot many kinds of rifles and pistols. The boys loved this outing. The years rolled on and in Sept 2018 Chuck, Sally, Suzi and I decided to make a trip out west. We would stay in his big trailer; Chuck and I would drive his new truck. This month-long trip out West was a once in a lifetime. Our trip included visits to Mount Rushmore and various places in South Dakota, Montana, then Yellowstone and Bryce and Zion Canyons. So much fun. Our trip continued south to Phoenix where Sally’s sister lived. Then on to Nashville, TN. Then home, we drove 6,000 miles on this trip. The next year 2019 we went with Chuck and Sally to Rotunda West, Florida, for the month of February. The trip was a lot of fun. Lots of sightseeing in the region, boat trips, beaches and swimming, dinners, and cookouts, but Sally was not doing well at this time. 2020 was lost due to covid but the group met in Chucks driveway and partied next to his new trailer. Sally died in Sept.2021. This was hard on Chuck and our whole wine group. The next year Chuck, Suzi and I went to Bradenton, Florida for the month of February. It was OK but not the same. The beaches were great, the swimming pool awesome, restaurants super but, we were without Sally and Chuck was visibly distressed. This year (2023) Chuck went to Dunedin to visit with Gary and Vivian, we followed his visit by a week as we were in Palm Coast. We all returned to Ohio in Late Feb, and in March suddenly Chuck became ill, his heart quit and he died. Chuck and Sally, you both will be sorely missed. The group: Gary, Vivian, Joe, Barb, Tony, Michelle, Carol, Emmitt, Linda, Lois, Elsabe, Svetlana, Ken, Suzi, and many others, and those who have passed; Brian, Cliff, CJ, Wim, and Bodie.
