Charlene Marie Short Hammond, 86, of Westerville, born November 27, 1939, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026. Preceded in death by parents Robert and Elsie Short, brother David Short, and son-in-law Gregory J. Fester. Survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Charles (Jack) Hammond.
Charlene is survived by four daughters: Jackie Whalen, Julie Fester (Joe), Linda (Douglas) Frey, and Beth (Jeff) Ramsey, twelve grandchildren: Jake (Amie) Whalen, Zach (Samantha) Whalen, Jennifer (Kyle) Vandevoorde, Megan (Dillon) Miller, Peyton (Michaela) Fester, Ava, Anna, and Evan Frey, Jack, Robert, Luke, and Logan Ramsey, five great-grandchildren: Charles and Henry Whalen, Levi and Gemma Miller, and Beau Whalen; sisters-in-law Marcia Short, Shirley (Hal) Sharp, Eva Hammond, brother-in-law James Hammond, and many other family members and friends. A special thanks to Cheryl, James, KaDai, and Lucy with Mt. Carmel Hospice, the nurses and doctors at ICU at Mt. Carmel Hospital and caregiver Jennifer Tomes.
Charlene graduated from Westerville High School in 1957, and The Ohio State University School of Nursing in 1961. Charlene worked in Public Health Nursing, The Columbus School district with special needs children, and worked at her husband’s dental practice. She volunteered throughout the community and was a lifelong member of Central College Presbyterian Church.
Charlene found great joy in traveling to many places, such as out west, beach trips, and to Europe. She was an avid Buckeye fan. Charlene was a devoted wife, a deeply loving mother, and a woman of strong and unwavering faith. Charlene’s kindness knew no bounds; she gave generously, loved deeply, and welcomed everyone with warmth. Family meant everything to her and she cherished every moment spent with those she loved. She built lasting friendships and touched so many lives with her compassion and gentle spirit. Her legacy is one of love, faith, and generosity.
Though we will miss her dearly, we find comfort in the many memories she leaves behind and the example she set for all of us. She will forever live in our hearts. Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 10 am to 11am at Central College Presbyterian Church, 975 South Sunbury Road, Westerville, Ohio. A Memorial service will follow at 11 am at the church. Interment will take place immediately following the service at Fancher Cemetery. A celebration of life luncheon will be held afterward at the church in Ballard Hall where family and friends are invited to gather and share memories.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charlene’s honor to the American Diabetes Association, Central College Presbyterian Church or a favorite charity.
