Anne Brock McCord, of Columbus Ohio, passed away on December 15, 2023.
She is survived by her children Michael, Christopher and Kathleen McCord; her sister Elizabeth Brock; and her grandchildren Alejandra, Meredith, Thomas and Brock McCord. Her husband Thomas McCord predeceased her in 1983. Her older brother Fred passed away in 2020.
Anne McCord was a daughter, a mother, and a grandmother. A student and then a teacher. She was a sister, a wife, a niece and an aunt, and a mother-in-law. She was born in West Virginia during the Great Depression, and saw her father go off to the Pacific during World War II. She saw all of her children graduate from high school and college and go on to build their careers even as she was beginning her career in teaching as a young widow. Throughout her life, her children valued her support, advice and wisdom.
Anne was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, a proud Buckeye who lived in central Ohio for almost all of her life, and a citizen who cared about her community and her country and always believed we should be working toward that more perfect union.
Anne was born in Grafton, West Virginia to Fred Brock and Agnes Meloy Brock, where her father Fred was an engineer on the Tygart Dam as part of the Public Works Administration. In 1939, the family moved to the Panama Canal Zone, where Fred joined the team examining ways to strengthen the Canal against possible attack. During World War II, Fred joined the SeaBees and deployed to the Pacific theater, leaving Agnes to bring their children back to the United States, where they lived with relatives on a farm in Ohio until Fred returned from the service.
Upon Fred's return, the family moved to Upper Arlington, Ohio. Anne worked part time at Tremont Pharmacy, moving during her senior year to the then-rural area of Hilliard. She entered Ohio State University, pursuing an education degree and pledging Kappa Delta sorority. At OSU she met Thomas McCord, two years her senior. Anne left school to get married in 1958 and start a family. Tom worked for what was then known as General Telephone (GTE, now part of Verizon). Except for a brief relocation to New Philadelphia, Ohio, Tom and Anne lived and raised their children in Marion, Ohio where they were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In addition to raising a family, Anne was active in the Junior Service Guild volunteer organization.
As the children grew, graduated and headed off to college, Anne returned to finish college. She re-enrolled at OSU, completing her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1982. Tragically, months after Anne earned her degree and entered the teaching profession, her husband Tom died. Anne taught initially at Tri-Rivers Vocational School in Marion, then at Delaware Area Career Center, where she taught business. Shortly thereafter, Anne moved to Columbus. After twenty years of teaching, Anne retired. She remained in Columbus, a city she had always enjoyed.
Anne was known to her friends and family to have a quiet, gentle personality. She greatly valued culture and learning. Anne was an avid reader and a lover of theatre. She loved to travel and had a special interest in historical destinations. She valued public service and respected those who served. As a mother and a teacher, Anne spent her life strengthening the vital foundations of her community. Anne valued education and respect for others. Anne was committed to her community, her church and her country in ways that were no less deeply held for being thoughtful and moderate. She instilled and passed on those values by example.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 313 N. State Street, Westerville, Tuesday, December 19th at 10:30 a.m. with visitation from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, Somerset, Ohio.
