SARGEANT
Judith A. Sargeant, age 71, of Westerville, OH passed away July 23, 2016, at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital. Judy grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, studied and received her bachelors degree in elementary education at Penn State in 1966. She taught for one year in Philadelphia before marrying Jim Sargeant. Her Pennsylvania-centric life changed as Judy traveled the world as an Army Wife, stationed in Germany, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois, Mississippi, Kansas, South Carolina, Washington, D.C., Kentucky, and the Netherlands. Along the way, two daughters were born. After 22 years in the service, Jim retired and the couple settled in Westerville. Once their girls were independent, Judy went back to school and earned her Masters in Special Education from The Ohio State University. She began teaching at Grandview Heights City Schools in 1994. After 12 years of rewarding work at the Edison Intermediate-Middle School, Judy retired from teaching. Judy was an avid gardener and former President of the Annehurst Village Garden Club. She shared her enthusiasm for gardening by visiting school classrooms. She was also active in the Annehurst Elementary Reads program, which helps elementary students improve their reading skills. Teaching was in her blood and Judy loved to teach children to learn how to learn. In recent years she enjoyed knitting for herself and others. Judy loved to travel with her husband, touring new parts of the U.S. and Europe nearly every year. Judy and Jim celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary earlier this month. She is survived by her husband Jim; daughters, Susan (John) Southard of Sequim, WA and Karen (Andrew) Shih of Beaverton, OR (currently residing in Shanghai, China); grandchildren, Dani Kaminski-Southard and Sean Southard, Justin and Julia Shih; sister, Linda (Bernard) Keisling of State College, PA; brother, Douglas (Kay Holsinger) Wood of Ann Arbor, MI; and a number of nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Anne Wood. Friends may call at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, Thursday 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Church of the Messiah United Methodist, 51 N. State Street, Westerville, Friday at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Linda Scott officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Church of the Messiah United Methodist in Westerville or to the lung cancer fund at Ohio State by mail to: The James Development Office, Blue Beautiful Skies Fund #314981, P.O. I am so very sorry for the loss of Judy. I got to know her at Church of the Messiah, after doing a Christmas Cantata together. Ever since then, we always would talk at the church-I always found myself looking for her-I just loved talking with her. My husband and I are heartbroken to hear of her passing. She always spoke so fondly of her family. I will always remember her beautiful smile. And her attitude..she will always be such an inspiration…I know she was a very strong and brave lady. I know she will be missed so very much.
