John J. Philip, Sr., age 85, of Westerville, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 1, 2016 at Riverside Hopital. Retired from State of Ohio Library. Survived by children, John J. Philip, Jr., Marianne Philip, Jeanne M. Philip, Lawrence F. Philip and Therese M. (David) Ramey; 6 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Helen M. Philip, son, Charles F. Philip and brothers, Fred and Bill Philip. Friends may call at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, Friday 6-8 p.m. where service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. with visitation 1 hour before the service, Fr. Tom Petry, officiating. Celebration of Life service will be held at Chapel North, 5325 Smothers Road, Westerville, Saturday at 3:30 p.m., Pastor Jared Howell, officiating. Private interment Pioneer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The James Cancer Hospital.

Meeting John in 2000 at my first Bookmobile conference was Awesome! He was a person that was so genuine and caring about what we did, and he made each of us feel validated in the work we did! There will Never be another Just like him. We share in your sympathy of his passing, but we rejoice in remembering all that he has done for us. Every conference from then on he remembered us from Minnesota and his smile and his hugs were huge. From Minnesota we send that love back to your family with big smiles and huge hugs. family members. I was reflecting on the times myself and some of the cleric Brothers (now priests) enjoyed lunch at your home after our Sunday duty at St. Pauls in Westerville.
They were happy, enjoyable moments of sharing. May you always remember the joyful, family times your parents spent with you. Friendship HUGS of ENCOURAGEMENT, and most of all, my Mass and Communion for your dad’s repose. May he rest in peace! Jerry

Oh,how I adored this man! I have him to thank for the wonderful career I had in the Bookmobile/Library Outreach world. He mentored, encouraged and offered me so many opportunities to progress in my career. He was so full of fun and laughter and I will carry the memory of him with me forever. My sincere condolences to the Philip family on the passing of John Philip. I meet John Philip only once, years ago at a bookmobile conference in Ohio. He was known to all as “Mr. Bookmobile.” He was a great inspiration to me when I was just starting out in bookmobile and outreach field, so much so that I became an active member of the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services. As the past Committee Chair for the Scholarship and Awards Committee, I had the privilege of being part of the processes of awarding the John Philip Award to someone in our field who aspired to be like John. The award honors his dedication and his tireless work and serves as a pinnacle for all Bookmobile and Outreach staff to aspire to reach. May the memories you hold of John help you through this difficult time.

I have known John since the late 1980s. He helped Holmes County purchase it’s 1994 Bluebird and helped us vision what we could do. Later he brought the Wall Street Journal to our service. You could always count on John to help you with a problem. His love of bookmobiles started with the Ohio Bookmobile Conference, later the National Conference, and eventually helped get ABOS off the ground. He was a giant among us. Thank you for loaning him to us.
