Jeanne Augustus (Metzger), age 80, of Westerville. Preceded in death by her mother and father, St. Claire and Julia Schrock Metzger, step-mother Doris Metzger, and brothers, George and Dr. Paul Metzger. Jeanne was born and raised in Westerville. Her mother was a Schrock and her uncle owned the farm that now is part of Metzger Park. She graduated from Westerville High School and Otterbein University, where she was an administrative assistant in the Department of Theatre and Dance for a number of years. Jeanne married Tom Augustus in 1954. She is survived by Tom, and her five daughters, Sue Augustus (Judy), Terri DelGreco (Tom), Lori Augustus, Carole Augustus (Ueli) and Gail Salmon (Chuck); 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church, 313 N. State Street, Westerville, OH on Saturday, January 30th at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Fr. David E. Gwinner, celebrant. The family will receive friends two hours before the mass. A private interment will be held later. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Jeanne’s name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family wishes to thank the staff at Forest Hills Nursing Center for the wonderful care they gave to Jeanne for almost three years and Kindred At Home Hospice for their care over the past week. Since learning of Jeanne’s passing yesterday, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her. When you spend four short years (or in my case, five) in a place, it’s easy to forget people and how you know them. Jeanne was not a person to be easily forgotten.
I was one of her work study kids in the office. Being one of “her kids” sometimes felt like being part of an exclusive club. Membership benefits included being witness to her magical way of keeping OCT people past and present forever connected, hearing the best gossip complete with Jeanne’s wry commentary, and getting to see this tiny, gray-haired grandma command respect from anyone setting foot in her office, from students to tenured professors to Otterbein Theatre Guild members to successful guest artists. Jeanne taught me that it is the people who require the least amount of fanfare who actually keep the whole organization running. For many of us, she was the loving friend and confidant who listened while you unloaded your burdens, and helped you find the silver lining when things seemed grim. She was the one who hunted me down during my first year at Summer Theatre to tell me my dad was getting a kidney transplant. When I was struggling after my Grandma died, I consulted Jeanne about what to do to get help. She knew each and every one of us students as though we were her own kids, and loved us or scolded us with the same devotion.
I joke around a lot about how I’ll be paying on my Otterbein loans until I’m dead, but if I had to do it all again, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it, for the time spent with Jeanne was priceless.

Jeanne was a dear person, a good friend, a lovely lady and will be greatly missed by all of her Otterbein Theatre family. There are not words to express my sorrow for your loss. May you take peace in knowing how much she was loved by all who knew her.

Jeanne was a dear friend who touched many lives through her association with Otterbein University where she was a mentor and friend to numerous students, faculty and staff. She will live on in our hearts and I celebrate that she now rests in peace.
