I knew Mrs.Boyd as a student at Hayes High. She influenced me so much to never give up your dreams and to persevere thru obstacles. She loved the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and chose the best music for us to sing, especially at Easter. I especiallly loved performing all of Handels Messiah at Ohio Wesleyan one year. We worked hard, but Mrs. Boyd made it fun. My heart goes out to the whole family. She will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear about Kim’s illness and passing from my mom this past week. I have thought of her often – how she pushed us to reach higher heights than we imagined we could reach as musicians, and how she provided a home away from home in her office for all us nerdy music geeks:-) I send you and her my warmest thoughts and gratitude.

Mrs. Boyd had actually been on my mind a lot the past several months because I was deciding if I wanted to go back into school for music or in the health field. Then several days ago I heard this very very sad news. It totally broke my heart. She was one of my most favorite teachers. She knew how talented I was as a percussionist and tried to put me in as many things as possible to use that talent. She was pushing me to major in music but I didnt want to go into that at that time. I offer my sincere condolences and I will remember her for the rest of my life because I will always have a passion for music, partly in thanks to Mrs Boyd!

Dear family of Kim,
I am so sorry for your loss. I taught with Kim at Otterbein, and she welcomed me warmly when I arrived in my new role as coordinator of Music Theory and Aural Skills. She helped me with resources for my class, and I could tell that she cared deeply about her students and helping them develop the skills they needed to be successful musicians. One day a couple of years ago, she very graciously offered 10 minutes in a packed rehearsal schedule to read through a new composition by one of my students, because she “loved him and wanted to help him.” The outpouring of love for Kim on my Facebook news feed only begins to describe how much she meant to all of us at Otterbein. It was a beautiful ceremony on Saturday, and I wish you all peace during this sad time. Rest in peace, Kim.
Sincerely,
Jenny Merkowitz

Mrs. Boyd was so charismatic! All the boys were in love with her, and all the girls wanted to be her! My strongest memory of her is playing flute in the pit orchestra for the Hayes High School musical. Mrs. Boyd conducting with platinum blond hair, and backless black gown. Thanks for your passion and commitment. And your love of teenagers.

Norm, Matthew and Ann,
I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your wife and mom. Kim was such a bright light in this world and she will be missed by so many. I had the great fortune of having your mom as a teacher at Hayes when she first arrived in Delaware to teach. She inspired me to become a teacher and was so supportive of me in my own career as a music teacher. I will be forever grateful that I got to tell her just how much she mean’t to me and how much I appreciated everything she taught me.
A beautiful, classy, inspiring woman has left all of us on earth, but a star in heaven is shining brighter, because she has arrived to be with the Lord! My deepest condolences to all of you.

I have read the many, many wonderful tributes to her from students and colleagues and can only add that we were all very fortunate to have known her. She was a treasure, and I’m sure she has left a tremendous void in your heart. But I know she also treasured you, so I hope you hold fast to that thought. Matthew and Ann, I remember when your mom first came to Hayes. She taught us how to sit up straight and breathe. She inspired us in all kinds of music and was a friend to all. I spent many of my lunches with her in her office and watched how she’d eat her little loaf of bread for lunch. Such a classy lady in everything she did. My heart goes out to your whole family.

Norm, Matthew, and Ann, Your wife and mother was a wonderful woman and a good friend. She raised the quality of music in Delaware to a new high. I first met her the first year that she came to Hayes. My husband Steve was a new teacher that year also. She had 2 of my younger brothers and 3 of my sisters in her choirs. I later joined the Delaware City schools music faculty and we became friends. My children Rob and Stephanie loved having her as their teacher and mentor. She taught them not only to appreciate all kinds of music but to love singing. She spread a lot of joy throughout Delaware and the community. She will truly be missed but heaven’s choir has gained another wonderful singer.
Michael Beeghley - Jul 16, 2015
Mrs. Boyd was a music teacher like no other. She convinced me to be a music major in college and has thus shaped my life forever. She was a true professional, pushing high school musicians to achieve beyond what they knew they were capable of. Thank you so much, Mrs. Boyd. You will be missed but your legacy still lives on. So many old friends weighing in here, it’s obvious how much of an impact Kim had in all our lives. She was beautiful, intelligent and talented. She was also WAY more than just a teacher.
I still play brass and sing because of her support and love of music.
Not so sure she liked Zappa though…
God bless,
P.Pritchard, Hayes Class of ’79.

I join with Otterbein students and alums in grieving for Kim Boyd’s passing. Kim made beautiful music at Otterbein for twelve years, with Camerata, Otterbein Vocal Ensemble and Otterbein Singers. She was a wonderful colleague and conductor, and so personable and positive! I’m glad to have had the opportunity to work with her.

Dear Mrs. Boyd and Family: I found out about your newest adventure via an e-mail from a high school buddy. My eyes immediately filled with tears and my heart with sadness. I have such fond memories of you that I wanted to share some of those with others who cared about you also. I last saw you at an Ohio Music Educators conference in Columbus several years ago. We were having breakfast at the hotel one morning and I decided to go over and say “hi.” I could not believe how much you had aged and apparently it was mutual because you did not recognize me! I reminded you a bit about who I was and how much you had meant to me and my brother Matt that you were like a mother to us and you still did not remember! But it did not matter, I was so excited to see you. You made my day again, like many others, before I graduated in 1978. You were the first person I felt comfortable enough to talk about my sexuality with and you did not bat an eye. You remained steadfast and kept supporting me with meaningful musical experiences. I will never forget your beauty, grace, style, immense talent and ability to make it so much more than music education. And now, once again, I am inspired by you to try and leave behind a similar legacy by providing my students with the most meaningful musical experiences I possibly can. You mattered a lot to many people. Thank you Mrs. Boyd! You definitely helped change the world for the better! With Love Always, Marc Finney (Breece)

I was blessed to see the positive impact of Ms. Boyd on not only my sister, Alesia Conners (now Doughty) as well as our daughter Kerry Reiner (now Cantrell). Dear Ann, Matt and Norman – I was so saddened and shocked to hear of Kim’s passing. She was the primary reason I continued to go forward in the musical world. She was one of my top three teachers and was never far from my thoughts. I only regret that she retired from Hayes a year before my son started there. My prayers are with you all in this sorrowful time.

I am so saddened to hear of Mrs. Boyd’s passing. I only attended one year (my senior year) at Hayes High School, but I truly enjoyed being in her class. She had more of a musical influence on me than all the other teachers I had from 6th grade through college. Her passion for music was very evident and her dedication to teaching and to the students was top notch. She is missed, but leaves a wonderful legacy. My condolences to her family.
Tami Gilliland Ustaszewski - Jul 16, 2015
When I started high school I was lost, but Mrs. Boyd took me under her wing and gave me something to be a part of. I lived my high school years in Room 12, some of the best times of my life. To say that I love Kim Boyd is an understatement. The amount of lives that she has touched and shaped is overwhelming. We have all been blessed. May family and friends be comforted in wonderful memories of this joyful lady. -Hayes High School class of 1984

Kim was an indelible presence as a colleague of
many years in Cols. Symphony Chorus. She uplifted us by her enthusiasm, music talent, technique, aplomb and acumen. She’ll be sorely missed. We’ll remember her in our upcoming season Christmas sacred music and Mendelssohn ‘Elijah’.
Cherie Brooks - Jul 16, 2015
Kim Boyd. I wish I would have told you how much you did for me, for my students, for so many of my friends, with your talents, your support, your eager encouragement, your ability to share until it hurt. When I met you, you asked me a few, very complex choral questions, one difficult piano question, and then told me I was the real deal. That did more for my confidence in one moment than any other moment I have had professionally. I never thanked you.
I know you are in heaven, singing gloriously and directing all the angels around you to do the same…or else. I’m so sorry I couldn’t say thank you, and good-bye. So much love to your family. You are loved, missed, and have forever changed the musical and educational world of so mo many.

My condolences to your family during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Clark Tieman - Jul 16, 2015
One of my favorite stories about Mrs. Boyd was, when preparing to demonstrate how she would want a vocal line to be performed, she would say to the choir, “Forgive me, I’m in bad voice,” and PROCEED TO SING A HIGH A IN PIANISSIMO WITH PERFECT TONE AND TECHNIQUE. She did this kind of thing a few times. Eventually, we pointed it out to her, and she said nothing but, “If you thought that was good, you should’ve heard me 30 years ago!” with a wink and a laugh.
I am so sorry for your loss of this wonderful teacher, friend, and loved one. I was so honored that she returned to Otterbein for what may have been one of the last times to see my recital in February 2014. She was an amazing lady, and I will never, ever forget her.
Nicole (Howard) Rice - Jul 16, 2015
I am so sorry to hear of Ms. Boyd’s passing. She will be missed by so many. She was such an inspiration and encourager to me and so many others. I will always remember the Hayes Musicals, the Hallelujah at the Christmas Concert and the Spring concerts. I am sure she is singing with the Angels and our Lord right now. May you all find comfort in that. My prayers are with all of you during this time.

This tells me that when a person changes and affects your life profoundly and positively, tell them of your gratitude before it’s too late! I am saddened that Kim (Mrs. Boyd) is gone. I always say that my high school music teacher (Kim) is one of the biggest reasons that I am a professional musician today. She created opportunities for us and was a role model for me as a person, musician, and female. My heart goes out to you, her family.

Kim Boyd was the epitome of inspiration. The world has lost a truly fantastic musician and educator yet the heavens have gained a brilliant star. Her gift was her passion and her love of music. I know I would not be the person I am today without having been in the Otterbein Vocal Ensemble, under her direction. My deepest condolences to the Boyd family and to the OVE family as well. The choir of heaven just got a new lead Soprano.

So sad to hear of Mrs. Boyd’s passing. She was a wonderful and talented educator at Delaware Hayes. I enjoyed orchestra and choir and eventually being part of the pit orchestra and even taking part in a musical by my senior year. She had such a great impact on all of her students. She will be greatly missed but will be a delightful addition to the angel’s choir in Heaven.

So sorry to learn of Kim’s passing. Kim was always such a gracious colleague and friend, both at Otterbein University and as a customer at Stanton’s Sheet Music. Her kind words and supportive spirit will be greatly missed.
Jason Ellinger - Jul 16, 2015
I would not be who I am today without Ms. Boyd’s influence. When I was just gaining an appreciation for classical music, and moved from Band at Willis to Orchestra at Hayes, she would allow me to come in before school and play her something I heard on the radio the night before and ask question after question about it. I’m sure I was asking about things she’d know forever, but it was new to me, and she endured my questions with such grace and a teaching spirit. Then when I started singing, her belief in me gave me such confidence to get out there and shoot for the stars. I cannot express enough my thanks to Ms. Boyd… for everything I learned from her… for how she cared… for how she encouraged me… My condolences on her loss, may she rest in peace and flights of angels sing her to her rest!
Angela Blankenship-Aponte - Jul 16, 2015

It is astounding to think of the number of Delaware Hayes students whose lives were enriched, or indeed totally changed, by their participation in Kim’s choir or orchestra. For so many years I saw her magic firsthand in the lives of my private voice students and then in the lives of my own two children. She made singing in choir “the place to be” for so many, and there they found not only the joy of music but also her all-important support for their personal well-being. Rest in peace, dear Kim. Your good works live on in so many. Our deepest thanks.
Julie Robinson - Jul 16, 2015
I wanted to just express my deep sadness. She was a high school music teacher and yes, she was talented and passionate about music. One of my clearest memories is of her zealously conducting the Hallelujah chorus every Christmas. She was a wonderful music instructor but she also created a haven for so many of us. The choir room was our place to go to be with people like us. It was our respite and our place where everyone belonged. I will always be thankful for our most beautiful and talented music teacher- she touched many many lives for the better. I am so very thankful that she was a part of my life– the world will be less without her in it.
I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,

There are no words to express my deep sadness upon hearing of Kim’s death. As one of her first groups at Delaware Hayes High School, she rocked my world. It is because of her that I majored in music at The Ohio State University. I aspired to be “another Kim Boyd”. We continued to cross paths through the years, even meeting up at a convention in Toledo, Ohio. I am richer for having known Kim. To the family, my deepest condolences and prayers for God’s perfect peace during this difficult time.

Oh,Kim – this is just too sad. Norm, you are in my heart during this tough time. Know that I carry only the fondest of memories of Kim – from Symphony Chorus and also her time with us as interim choir director at First Unitarian. She reached out to me on a personal level because I was going through a tough time myself. We made beautiful music together – superb director and lover of excellent music-making. Warmest hugs to all of you.

Ave Maria…. Beautiful music for a beautiful person that taught all of us so much at Hayes! She made me a singer when I started out as a shy flute player. She ultimately had me playing musical percussion, oboe, flute, girls quartet, mixed ensemble, trios in the musicals! My love for classical music was expanded by my involvement with her talent. Blessings and comfort to all the family in this time of loss. She will be fondly remembered.
Patrick Roach - Jul 16, 2015

I am shocked and so saddened to learn of Kim’s passing. Kim was an enormously gifted musician and educator, and a wonderful friend to me. She will be missed in the Columbus area music community, and by the many former students and friends who were blessed to call her friend. I regret that I am out of town this week and will regretfully miss the service for Kim!

I was so stunned and saddened to hear this news. Kim was a great friend and fellow staff member at Hayes High School. What an incredibly talented, classy, and dignified lady! as sad as we are at her passing we must remember how blessed we all were to have known her and been influenced by her. To her family I hope you continue to celebrate the fact that you had her in your lives! How wonderful!
I know I will see her someday leading a choir of angels. No doubt wearing a black dress with that radiant blonde mane catching the light just right!!!! 🙂 God bless and keep you all.

My thoughts and prayers to Mrs. Boyd’s family. I have the fondest memories of choir at Hayes and her ability to bring out the best musical talent in anyone. As well as getting us passed our fear of the stage and the wobbly risers we stood on.
