Barbara Sue (Hankins) Thatcher of Mount Liberty passed away Sunday evening, January 5, 2020 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. She was born January 11, 1941 in Tazewell, Virginia, to the late John Yancy and Margaret Frances (Spurgeon) Hankins.

Barbara graduated from Centerburg High School in 1959, and from the 3-B Beauty School, in Newark, Ohio, becoming a licensed beautician in 1960. She married her high school sweetheart, George Carl Thatcher on June 18, 1961. This past summer George and Barbara celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary making a total of 64 years of their lives spent together. Barbara is preceded in death by her beloved husband George who passed away only 96 days before Barbara; the longest time they were ever apart. Now they will be together forever.

Barbara was involved in countless activities in the life of her community, Centerburg and Knox County. Among them, she was a member of the Lucy Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Ohio Community Theater Association and she directed the Ohio Junior Miss Scholarship Program for several years. Barbara produced and directed many musicals and performed numerous principle roles in Mount Vernon Players theater productions. She served in the past as a Scout leader and she was Auxiliary Adviser and Choreographer for the Centerburg High School Marching Band and directed musicals for the CHS Drama Department for many years. Barbara was a member of the Centerburg United Methodist Church since moving to Centerburg in the 7th grade. At that time, she began singing with the Chancel Choir, which she enjoyed for over 50 years. Over the years, Barbara organized Vacation Bible School programs, led youth groups and was Chair of the Worship Committee for 30 years. More recently, she organized the Centerburg Community Choir and was very proud of their performances. Above all, Barbara enjoyed being with her husband and family.

Surviving are her daughter Lisa, son John (Beth), and grandchildren John (Brooke), Sam, (Alyssa Radcliffe), Thomas, William (Kylee) and Sarah Anne who were all at her side to say goodbye and to escort her on her journey home. Barbara is also survived by her sister Nancy Thorpe, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday, January 10, 2020, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Centerburg United Methodist Church. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 11 a.m. at the church. The family will also receive visitors one hour before the service on Saturday. The Reverend Matt Skelton will officiate. Burial will be at Eastview Cemetery in Centerburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Barbara's memory to the Centerburg United Methodist Church.
