Mary Elizabeth (Houck) McCurdy beloved Mother, Grandmother and friend to many in the Community passed away peacefully November 6, 2021 at the age of 93. Mary was born April 18, 1928 to Clark M & Inez (Lewis) Houck, Bennington Twp., Licking Co., Oh. Mary met Russell F. McCurdy in of September 1945 while he was home on leave; they eloped to Russell Kentucky where they were married July 5, 1946. Mary & Russ purchased the old Owl Roost School building in 1946 and turned it into a home and started a family. They have 5 children, John McCurdy, Sandy (Bob) Sawyer, William (Cindy) McCurdy, Juanita (Mike) Witt and Lori (Tim) Tomblin. Russell passed away in 1967, and Mary continued to live in the home until 2017. Mary was a member of the Liberty Methodist Church of Liberty Twp., Licking Co., Avon Rep. for 15 years, loved crafting and gifting to her family to cherish, and worked on family genealogy which she was still helping with. Mary loved to talk and tell stories about her family, all the memories and happenings going on, so with that being said she was best known for her infamous Marengo News & Owls Roost columns in the Centerburg Gazette and Morrow County Sentinel. When Mary was interviewed in 2000 about her writing she said "I try to lift the spirits and leave the reader chuckling" and that she did for more than 25yrs. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, also sisters Gladys, Ethel, Pauline and brothers, Jim, Lewis, Dalton. Mary is survived by her 5 children, 8 grandchildren, David and Chad Sawyer, Linda McCurdy, Mandee (McCurdy) Fitzpatrick, Benjamin and Nicholas Witt, Russell C McCurdy, Brandon Sayer, 15 great grand-children, 5 great-great grandchildren with 2 more due after 1 st of year, along with Sister Thelma Hardy, Brother, George Houck, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was a very well known lady that didnt know a stranger; she will be dearly missed by all. Per Mary's wishes we will be having private viewing hours, but we encourage any of her friends that wish to attend her services to join us at her graveside. We will be gathering at the Alum Creek Friends Cemetery on Thursday Nov. 11 th at noon.

My Name is Missy and my mom is Mary Adkins and I am one of Emmett Adkins many grandchildren and when I think of Mrs. McCurdy it make me smile. I always felt like a celebrity because she always wished me a happy birthday in the Sentinel and when we moved away she always made mention of when we came back for a visit. That was a big deal back then in Marengo, Ohio in the 70's thru the 90's. I must have walked past her house a thousand times. What a special woman that could make such a little girl feel like such a big deal!!! She holds such a special place in my memories of the time I lived in Marengo. So sorry for your loss.
