James (Jim) Bender, loving husband, father, and loyal friend, died peacefully at Feridean Commons, Westerville, Ohio. Jim was 92 years old and a lifelong resident of Central Ohio. Jim graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, class of 1947. Jim and his twin brother, Jack, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as radar training instructors. Jim was an aerospace engineer with 30 years of service at Rockwell International. He earned an Associate degree in engineering from Franklin University and was a member of the National Association of Professional Engineers. He loved all things electronic and mechanical. Jim was ahead of his time, building an electric bike in the 1960s, years before a Tesla was created. He also built a mini bike and a rotary vane engine of his own design. He built a Bradley GT2 kit car from a bare shell. Loved flathead Fords, Plymouth Barracudas and all things automobile related. A man of exceptional intellect, wisdom, orneriness, and caring. He had a hundred sayings for how to get through life. How to never burn bridges. That sheet metal is replaceable as long as nobody got hurt. To set things on the ground because theyll end up there anyway. That you lose a little hide on every job. To move in slow motion around power tools. Love was not just a word said but action taken that showed his care for those around him. The world is a little bit better for Jim having been in it, and more rich for those who knew him. Jim is survived by his wife, Brenda Miller Bender; children Karen Bender of Gahanna, OH; Jeff (Bernie) Bender of Denver, NC; Kathy Bender of Westerville, OH; David (Betsy) Bender of Galena, OH; and Mark Bender of Mt. Gilead, OH. Grandchildren, Dr. Michelle (Brett) Schmerge, Danielle (Brent) Holloway, Jacob (Abby) Bender, Dr. Kathryn Bender, Eli Bender, Jimmy Bender, and Violet Bender. Great grandchildren, Kellen Schmerge, twins Addy and Colton Holloway, Anna Schmerge, Lacey Bender, and Luke Bender. Siblings Joan Slagle and Gerald Bender of Canal Winchester, OH. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Caroline Bender; his twin brother, John (Jack) Bender; his first wife, Phyllis Bender; and granddaughter, Chandis Bender. Friends may call 11:00 am-1:00 pm on Friday, November 5th at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Rd., Westerville, OH 43081 with funeral at 1:00 pm and interment immediately following at Burnside Cemetery, 8340 S Old 3C Rd, Westerville, OH.

We are so sorry for the loss of your father. You all are in our prayers. Jeff I have always looked up to you - you are so much like your father - patient, kind, caring and an awesome father to your daughters as well as an amazing grandpa! There is no higher honor than to walk in your father's footsteps! I know he was proud to have a son like you! God blessed our family the day you and Bernie met. You and Bernie have an amazing family and I believe it is because of our two amazing fathers!! God has a new angel and he will brighten heaven everyday !
