Steve (Harry Stephen) Downing passed into the loving arms of his Creator on May 31st after a lengthy illness. Steve was born August 2nd, 1944 in Columbus, Ohio to his parents Harry C. Downing and Elizabeth Willcox Downing. Steve graduated from Franklin Heights High School in Columbus class of 1962.

Steve began his 47-year banking career while still in high school working in a co-op program at City National Bank. Ready to attend OSU upon high school graduation, Steve opted instead to stay at City National, which later became Bank One. In the early days of financial computing, Steve had the distinction of becoming one of the first computer programmers in Ohio banking. A noted pioneer in the electronic banking industry, he performed decades of important work in Electronic Data Processing (EDP), Financial Card Services (FCS) and helped to lead the Common Systems Conversions for Bank One. Rising through the banking ranks, Steve eventually became a well-known Vice President at JP Morgan Chase and eventually retired in 2010.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years Pamela, her daughter Amber Groome, and his sons: Matt (Trish) Downing, Mark (Shelly) Downing; grandchildren: Nick (Georgianne) Downing, Monica Downing, Andrea Downing, Natalie Downing and sister Mary (Dale) James. Preceded in death by his sister Elizabeth Ann.

Steve was a founding member of the Columbus Marathon sporting event. Auto racing was another passion and he raced Fiats in the SCCA (Sport Car Club of America). He passed his passion to his sons who both race with the SCCA. Steve always enjoyed watching his sons and getting race updates when he could not attend.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 6th from 5-8 p.m. at Moreland Funeral Home 55 East Schrock Road, Westerville, OH 43081.

Dear Pam - I am so sorry that Steve isn't here with us any longer. His heart was so large and his humor even larger. I was just thinking about him last week...I wish I would have acted on my impulse to call him. God bless you, Pam. I will miss Steve.
