The world lost a great man on Sunday, March 14, 2021, when Robert J. Shortland passed away at age 83. Most knew him as "Bob" but a few of us were lucky enough to call him Son, Brother, Husband, Dad, Uncle, Grandpa, or Great Grandpa. He touched many lives, solved countless problems, and fixed just about anything you can imagine during his time on Earth. We will miss him greatly. Bob was born April 2, 1937 to Pete and Mary Shortland. He had many interesting jobs in his life - from driving a truck to loading cement blocks - but he spent the majority of his career as a union sheet metal worker. Bob was a tireless worker and took great pride in the buildings he helped to construct. He was outgoing and approachable, which led to many treasured friendships particularly during the twilight of his career as a custodian at Westerville North High School. In a life full of achievements, Bob's greatest joy was his 50-year marriage to his wife, Linda Shortland. Bob and Linda enjoyed hosting large family gatherings, boating on and fishing in Lake Erie, and planting beautiful gardens around their home in Westerville. They had three children Cindy (passed), Lee Ann, and Rob. They were loving parents and, later, incredible grandparents. Bob was devoted to, and helped care for Linda until she passed away in 2008. He spoke often of reuniting with her in Heaven. Bob was truly an inspiration in persevering through health problems late in life. During his last decade, he continued to be an engaged father and grandfather, he met his great granddaughters, and he forged new friendships with neighbors. Bob enjoyed the companionship of his dog Heidi (passed) and cruising the neighborhood in his Gator in search of construction or maintenance workers to chat up. He remained fiercely independent and never stopped looking for his next home improvement project. He spent the last year of his life in Michigan, making many precious memories with his son, Rob, and daughter-in-law, Stephanie. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Linda, his daughter Cindy, his father Pete, his mother Mary, and his brothers Eddie, Larry, Mike, and David. He is survived by his brother Jerry, his sister Mary Alice, his daughter Lee Ann, his son Rob (Stephanie), his grandchildren Joe (Kristin), Laura, Jim (Kallista), and Jess, his great grandchildren: Angel, Taylor, Gavin, Ezra, Mick, Cora, Zoey and many nieces, nephews. Visitation and funeral service will be held at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Rd, Westerville, Ohio. Visitation Friday, March 19th from 5-7 pm and Funeral 10 am Saturday, March 20th. Interment Mifflin Cemetery.
