In Memory of
Robert Michael Smith
October 8, 1945 - February 17, 2021

Robert Michael Smith, age 75, of Westerville passed away on Weds, Feb 17 after a long battle with multiple illnesses. Bob was born in Columbus, Ohio to the late Dorothy Miller Smith and Robert F. Smith. He attended Columbus South High School, where he was a musician and athlete. He then enlisted in the Air Force and served in northern Michigan during the Vietnam War . When he returned home to Columbus, he enrolled at OSU, where he graduated with a degree in Accounting. He was employed by the Columbia Gas Company for 30 years. He is survived by his wife Mary Bricker of Westerville, daughter Sarah Brickersmith, his son Michael and wife Sara of Cottage Grove, MN, and grandsons Justin, Jace and Jackson Smith., and his brother Keith Smith of Alba, Texas. He is predeceased by his sister, Leanne Smith Fogle .Bob was known to be an ornery character with a zest for life. He engaged in a variety of activities and passions, and none were done half way. He fixed up and rode motorcycles as a young man. He was a brilliant jazz musician, who never played later in life, but when he picked up a baritone saxophone he could make it sing. He passed his musical talents to his son and grandsons. He ran marathons and triathalons, and loved golf. He became an avid scuba diver, diving in the Caribbean, and in wrecks and caves from Michigan to Mexico. Bob did not like traditional rituals, and never wanted a service after his death. However, we may gather together in the summer if COVD restrictions permit to celebrate his life informally and share a toast. For those who want to honor his memory, you may donate to Divers Alert Network or DAN at or the Healthwell Foundation at
