Freda J. Weldon, age 90, of Fairborn, OH, formerly of New Albany, OH and Gahanna, OH, passed away September 2, 2019. Born September 4, 1928 to parents William McKinley Hickman and Anna Frances (Willis) in Center Village, OH. Predeceased by brothers Willis M. (Kinny) Hickman (Ginny), Harold Hickman (Nancy). Donald Hickman, sister Margurite (Margie) Watts and husband John E (Jess) Weldon. Freda grew up during both the Great Depression and World War II. As a result, she learned to become very self-reliant. This trait lasted almost her entire lifetime and served her well. Following high school, Freda worked as a waitress in the restaurant in the old passenger terminal at what was then known as Port Columbus. It was there that she met Jess Weldon who worked as an aircraft mechanic for Foster Lane and later Trans World Airlines. Their friendship developed and they eventually married on March 16, 1947. Together, they built a home in New Albany, OH. That is, literally, they built a home to the point of digging the basement with a shovel. Through the years Freda mostly was a stay-at-home mom but kept busy with things such as church choir (prettiest Alto voice ever), Cub Scout Den Mother, as well as a high school band parent. She once appeared on the old Ruth Lyons TV show in Cincinnati, singing with a group known as The Singing Moms. During son Bills high school, college and later years, Freda worked at Sears and Kohls, making many precious friends along the way. They are still precious friends. Many more friends were made at New Albany Church of Christ. When Jesss health began to deteriorate, he and Freda moved to Fairborn, OH to be close to son Bills family. And once again, she made friends, mostly from the First Church of Christ in Fairborn. One especially close friend was Lexie Freier, whom Freda loved dearly. Jess passed away in May, 2005, and Freda began another phase of self-reliance until her health began to fail. She finally realized she could not continue living by herself and doing the things she loved to do and so moved into assisted living at Elmcroft Senior Living in Fairborn, where she lived out her life. Freda is survived by son, William J (Bill) Weldon, loving daughter-in-law, Sue and beloved grandson, David; sister, Lois Eloise (Lou) Balish; nieces, Jane Yanosko, Sue Hach and Veronica Stewart; nephew, Russ Watts (Donna) and their children Ashley and Adam, The family would like to express their most gracious thanks to the staff at Elmcroft Senior Living. Never has there been a more caring, loving group of people, and Freda loved every one of them. The family is also grateful to the staff of The Friends Care Community in Yellow Springs, OH for their loving and caring support for Freda during twosessions of rehab and therapy. Calling hours will be at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 East Schrock Road, Westerville, OH on Sunday, September 8, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. where services will be held Monday, September 9, 2019 at 11 a.m. Pastor Steve Sisco of First Church of Christ, Fairborn, OH officiating, followed by burial services at Maplewood Cemetery in New Albany, OH. A celebration of Freda's life will be held at the First Church of Christ, 1166 Kauffman Ave., Fairborn, OH 45324 on September 16, 2019 at 7 p.m.. Memorial gifts may be made to the First Church of Christ, 1166 Kauffman Ave., Fairborn, OH 45324 or to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420.
